Río Hondo Reservoir shows improved water quality and species recovery

Recent environmental monitoring of the Las Termas de Río Hondo reservoir and its tributaries indicates high water quality and successful species recovery. Dr. Daniel Escobar Correa, the Ombudsman of Santiago del Estero, reported that oxygen levels and water volume remain optimal, even during the peak sugar and alcohol production season (zafra) by companies in Tucumán.

The monitoring efforts are a collaborative initiative between the Ombudsman's Office of Santiago del Estero and the Subsecretariat of Environment of Tucumán. To ensure the reliability of the data, teams from both provinces conduct joint inspections using boats and vehicles to maintain a strict chain of custody for water samples.

These rigorous controls were established following historical periods of contamination in the 1990s, 2000s, and between 2010 and 2013. The current positive ecological state is supporting the recovery of fish populations and various recreational activities within the reservoir.
