Río Negro conducts choique population survey in Meseta de Somuncurá
The Secretariat of Environment and Climate Change of Río Negro conducted a population survey of the choique (Rhea pennata pennata) in the Meseta de Somuncurá Natural Protected Area. The field work took place between September 22 and 25 in the upper basin of Arroyo Valcheta and adjacent sectors.
This initiative represents the first field action of a project aimed at the population restoration of this emblematic Patagonian species. The survey was a collaborative effort involving the Somuncurá Foundation, Aves Argentinas, and the EcoParque de Buenos Aires, combining state presence with scientific expertise.
Technical teams traversed transects to record individuals and groups, estimate population density, and locate active nests. Additionally, researchers assessed habitat variables, including steppe coverage, the presence of wetlands (mallines), and water availability, to evaluate the territory's suitability for future restoration efforts. The data collected will establish a baseline to guide future conservation and management decisions for the species within the protected area.
