Alfredo Pacheco and Fuerza del Pueblo spokesperson clash in Dominican Chamber

A heated confrontation occurred in the Dominican Republic's Chamber of Deputies between the Speaker, Alfredo Pacheco, and José David Báez, the spokesperson for the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) bloc. The dispute centered on the restructuring and distribution of legislative commissions for the upcoming term.

Báez challenged the procedure, arguing that the FP's position regarding its allotted number of commission spaces had not been respected. The exchange escalated when Pacheco denied Báez the right to a rebuttal, stating, “You don't have a rebuttal, deputy... here I am the one who gives the word.” Pacheco further remarked, “You want to debut by fighting, well let's fight.”

Following the verbal altercation, Báez and several other FP deputies walked out of the session, with some labeling Pacheco a “dictator.” Yván Lorenzo, Vice President of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), also condemned the incident, describing it as an “outrage” and comparing the behavior to the onset of dictatorial regimes.
