Río Negro proposes freedom of choice for IPROSS health coverage

The government of Río Negro has proposed a measure to end mandatory affiliation with the provincial health insurance provider, IPROSS. The initiative, announced by Governor Alberto Weretilneck, would allow active state workers and retirees to freely choose their health coverage and direct their contributions elsewhere.

Minister of Government and Labor Agustín Ríos stated that IPROSS is currently in a position to compete with other providers due to ongoing modernization efforts, including expanded coverage, new technology, and increased access to medications. Ríos noted that if the Legislature approves the proposal, IPROSS will need to earn the trust of its approximately 160,000 affiliates by improving services.

However, the proposal has raised concerns regarding the sustainability of the solidarity-based system. Critics question how the departure of certain members might affect the collective fund, particularly if those who use the system less frequently opt for other providers, potentially leaving IPROSS with fewer resources to cover those with high-cost or complex medical needs.
