Teacher unions in Argentina and Paraguay navigate labor disputes
Various teacher unions and government bodies in Argentina and Paraguay are navigating labor disputes and administrative changes. In Catamarca, Argentina, the Ministry of Education and Labor formalized the tenure of 2,090 teachers across 4,525 positions to fulfill a parity agreement.
In Entre Ríos, the Agmer union's Extraordinary Congress unanimously rejected a provincial government salary offer, which included increases of 3.5% in September, 1.5% in November, and 2% in December. The union argued the proposal was insufficient to counter inflation and authorized its leadership to pursue further labor actions. Similarly, technical education teachers represented by AMET rejected the latest salary proposal.
In Río Negro, a strike called by the UnTER union saw low participation, with only approximately 20% of teachers adhering to the measure. The provincial government announced it would apply salary deductions for those who did not work and criticized the union leadership for political stances that disrupt classes.
In Paraguay, the Federation of Educators (FEP) announced an agreement with the government that includes a 5% salary adjustment and new funding for teacher hiring and school maintenance, though the union continues to seek higher increases during budget discussions.
