Road accidents impose heavy economic burdens on South African businesses

South African businesses face significant financial strain due to road accidents, which extend far beyond immediate repair and medical expenses. Data from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) indicates between 11,000 and 13,000 annual deaths in the country, contributing to South Africa's status as one of the world's most dangerous driving environments.

Immediate costs for fleet accidents can range from R48,000 for minor incidents to R5.4 million for serious ones. However, these figures likely underestimate the total impact. Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, notes that indirect costs often dwarf direct expenses. These include missed deliveries, lost contracts, reputational damage, administrative burdens, and productivity losses due to employee injury and subsequent recruitment or training needs.

Industry estimates suggest that for every rand spent on direct accident costs, businesses incur an additional R3 to R5 in indirect expenses.
