Road Infrastructure Agency to cut 420 toll management staff
The Road Infrastructure Agency (API) has announced a reform plan that will result in the dismissal of 420 employees from the National Toll Management. While the total reduction involves 505 positions, 85 of these are currently vacant.
The reform will be implemented in two stages, beginning with the adoption of a new organizational regulation for API within the next four months. Following this, certain functions of the National Toll Management will be transferred to other structures, including the potential creation of a new executive agency under the Ministry of Transport to handle toll collection and electronic system administration.
Displaced workers will not be automatically reassigned. However, they will have the opportunity to apply for positions within the Ministry of Interior, the Customs Agency, or the National Revenue Agency, provided they meet the specific legal requirements and selection criteria. Selection processes are expected to begin on November 11.
In response to the announcement, employees organized protests in Sofia under the slogan “Security and predictability of jobs in API.” Labor unions, including the “Podkrepa” trade union, have expressed concerns regarding the lack of transparency and the potential impact on road safety and revenue collection. API management has assured that digital tools will optimize inspections and that the changes will not decrease toll collection or degrade control.
