Road pricing technology could yield 40 billion NOK in societal benefits

Eight years of research has prepared road pricing technology for the mass market, with potential societal benefits estimated by Menon Economics to reach between 6.9 billion and 40.3 billion NOK by 2040.

Road pricing involves calculating costs based on distance traveled, location, time of day, and vehicle emissions. The research, supported by the Research Council of Norway, suggests that implementing such systems could lead to reduced traffic congestion, improved road safety, lower emissions, and opportunities for exporting Norwegian technology.

The Tag4All project, a collaboration between SINTEF, Q-Free, and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, has focused on developing practical, large-scale satellite-based positioning and digital solutions. However, the report notes that realizing these economic gains depends heavily on future political decisions regarding the adoption of satellite-based road pricing schemes.
