Road safety and traffic enforcement measures implemented in Louga and Butembo
Authorities in Louga, Senegal, and Butembo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, are implementing new measures to improve road safety and traffic flow.
In Louga, the National Road Safety Agency (Anaser) launched a mission to address a rise in accidents. During the first half of 2026, the region recorded 1,068 accidents resulting in 41 deaths. Anaser conducted joint inspections with the gendarmerie, checking 275 vehicles and issuing fines to 115 for infractions such as speeding and dangerous overtaking. The agency also met with transport workers and motorcycle riders to promote adherence to the highway code.
In Butembo, the Congolese National Police (PNC) has transitioned from awareness campaigns to a repressive phase to combat traffic congestion. Police have deployed to strategic axes to enforce new rules, including the immobilization of vehicles that fail to comply. New mandatory stopping points have been established for motorcycle taxis to reduce bottlenecks in the city center.
