Road safety authorities in Nigeria and Ghana call for enhanced enforcement and data-driven measures
Road safety authorities in Nigeria and Ghana are emphasizing the need for integrated strategies to reduce traffic accidents.
In Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is advocating for data-driven measures and stronger partnerships to address emerging road safety challenges. During the 2026 Special Marshals Annual Conference, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed highlighted the importance of the 2025 Special Marshals Guidelines, which aim to improve accountability, transparency, and coordination. The initiative focuses on enhancing collaboration in areas such as traffic management, emergency response, and community interventions.
In Ghana, the Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, stated that education alone is insufficient to change driver behavior without strict enforcement. He outlined a four-pillar approach to road safety consisting of education, enforcement, engineering, and emergency response. Amaliba warned that without effective enforcement of traffic laws, motorists may view safety education as mere advice rather than mandatory regulations, undermining efforts to improve road discipline.
