Road safety efforts emphasize civic education amid driving incidents

Efforts to improve road safety are increasingly focusing on civic education to meet the European Union’s goal of zero road fatalities by 2050. Rather than relying solely on stricter penalties and controls, proponents suggest that integrating road safety into civic education can foster responsible behaviors in drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians alike.

In Italy, where accident rates remain high, the importance of early education is emphasized. This includes teaching children proper habits, such as wearing helmets and using pedestrian crossings, as well as the role of adults in setting examples regarding seatbelt use and avoiding distractions like mobile phones while driving.

In Senigallia, local authorities have reported a rise in driving under the influence. During the month of August, Carabinieri intensified patrols in nightlife areas, resulting in 13 driver's licenses being revoked due to alcohol or substance impairment. One notable incident involved a 60-year-old driver who overturned his vehicle on the Statale Adriatica Nord with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit.
