Road safety guidelines for drivers and emergency procedures

Various road safety guidelines emphasize the importance of proper vehicle handling and driver behavior to prevent accidents and damage.

For automatic transmission drivers, relying solely on the “P” (Park) position can be risky. While the position uses a locking pin to secure the wheels, it can be overwhelmed by force on inclines or sudden impacts. Using the handbrake in addition to the park setting is recommended to relieve pressure on the gearbox and ensure the vehicle remains stationary.

Regarding speed, driving significantly slower than the flow of traffic can be as hazardous as speeding. Experts note that inappropriate speeds disrupt traffic flow and force dangerous overtaking maneuvers. In urban areas, maintaining a consistent speed between 30 and 50 km/h is generally appropriate, and drivers should pull over if they are causing congestion.

In the event of a breakdown on a highway, drivers are advised to activate hazard lights and attempt to reach a parking area or hard shoulder. Once stopped, the engine should be turned off, wheels should be turned to the right to prevent the car from rolling into traffic, and occupants should exit via the passenger side to seek safety behind the guardrail.
