Road safety initiatives target young drivers in Australia and the UK

Efforts to improve road safety for young drivers are being addressed through both educational initiatives and regulatory scrutiny in Australia and the United Kingdom.

In Tamworth, Australia, the Young Drivers Expo is hosting over 1,300 students from 24 schools. The event utilizes graphic accident simulations and demonstrations to teach students how to handle dangerous situations. Organized by the Tamworth Regional Council with support from NSW Police, Transport for NSW, and the NRMA, the expo aims to address road safety statistics in rural New South Wales.

In the United Kingdom, the government has backed Ofcom to take action against social media companies that fail to remove content celebrating dangerous driving. This follows several fatal incidents linked to viral trends, such as driving the wrong way down streets or operating vehicles in ‘ghost mode’ by switching off lights. Recent tragedies include a head-on collision near Middlesbrough that killed seven people, and a collision in County Kildare, Ireland, that resulted in the deaths of five teenagers.
