Road safety operations in Ireland and UK result in numerous offenses

An Garda Síochána reported that nearly 150 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during a four-day Bank Holiday road safety operation in Ireland. Additionally, 3,490 speeding offenses were detected, including instances of drivers traveling significantly above the limit in Co. Wicklow and Co. Wexford. The operation has also seen two fatalities, and over 300 drivers were cited for mobile phone use or failing to wear seatbelts.

In the United Kingdom, Nottinghamshire Police conducted a five-day operation on the M1, resulting in 46 drivers being dealt with for mobile phone offenses. Officers, utilizing an unmarked HGV, observed motorists using navigation apps, texting, or calling while driving. Police clarified that using a device secured in a cradle does not exempt a driver from prosecution if the interaction causes distraction. Offenders face six penalty points and a £200 fine, while those distracted by mounted devices may be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention.
