Road transport sector faces rising fuel costs and driver shortages

The road transport sector is facing significant operational challenges driven by rising fuel costs and labor shortages. In Spain, José Alberto Cruz, manager of Travesa, reports that diesel costs have increased by 20% to 25% over the last six months. This surge has raised the proportion of fuel within total company costs from approximately 30% to between 40% and 45%, impacting both profitability and cash flow.

Beyond price hikes, industry leaders emphasize that economic uncertainty and a lack of predictability make it difficult to negotiate with clients and plan business activities. Additionally, the sector is struggling with a shortage of professional drivers, which continues to limit operational capacity.
