Poland proposes new traffic laws to combat speeding violations
Poland's Ministry of Infrastructure has introduced a legislative project to reform how traffic violations recorded by speed cameras and other devices are handled. The proposed "speed camera law" aims to address difficulties in identifying drivers and instances where owners fail to respond to correspondence from the General Inspectorate of Road Transport.
Under the new rules, vehicle owners will receive direct notifications regarding recorded violations. If an owner fails to respond or take action, they may be subject to an administrative fee that is significantly higher than a standard fine. To facilitate enforcement, a Central Register of Violations will be established to track infractions by foreign vehicles, potentially allowing authorities to impound cars or block border crossings for non-payment.
Additionally, the project includes a formal margin of error for automated speed measurements: 5 km/h on standard roads and 6 km/h on highways and expressways. Parallel to these legislative changes, Polish police have been conducting nationwide "Speed" operations to increase road safety and reduce accidents caused by excessive speed.
