Roadworks in South Holland expected to cause significant traffic delays

Following the summer holidays, significant traffic congestion is expected in the South Holland region, particularly around Rotterdam and the Drechtsteden. Rijkswaterstaat has scheduled extensive maintenance on various roads, bridges, and tunnels throughout the autumn.

Major works include asphalt maintenance on the A15 (Maasvlakte to Vaanplein), the A16 (Ridderkerk to Rotterdam), and the A20 (Kethelplein to Kleinpolderplein). Additionally, the Algerabrug near Krimpen aan den IJssel remains under maintenance until September 2026, and the Papendrechtsebrug renovation in Drechtsteden involves long-term closures, with the N3 closed until April 2027.

Commuters should prepare for delays of 30 to 60 minutes during peak hours. Specific bottlenecks include the Giessenbruggen on the A20, where capacity has been reduced from three lanes to two, and a truck and tour bus ban on the Merwedebrug (A27) between Gorinchem and Sleeuwijk. Rijkswaterstaat advises travelers to use public transport, work from home, or travel outside of rush hour where possible.
