Rob Jetten addresses Groningen earthquake damage repair delays

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten expressed understanding for the cynicism felt by residents in the Groningen earthquake zone regarding the long wait for home repairs. During a working visit to Zeerijp and Appingedam, Jetten acknowledged that a single visit would not resolve the deep-seated frustrations of the community.

In Appingedam, residents met the Prime Minister with banners, protesting what they perceive as an unfair repair process. Some residents questioned why certain houses are being demolished and rebuilt while others are not. In Zeerijp, Jetten observed the ongoing recovery phase, noting that the current strategy of staggered repairs is intended to prevent entire villages from becoming paralyzed by simultaneous construction.

The recovery process is expected to continue for a significant period, with the final house in Zeerijp not anticipated to be completed until 2034. Residents currently undergoing renovations are being moved into temporary exchange housing, which some younger residents described as feeling less like a home and more like temporary accommodations. Jetten emphasized the need for better communication regarding these processes.
