Robbie Lawler prepares for wrestling match against Khamzat Chimaev
Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler has addressed his upcoming wrestling match against Khamzat Chimaev at RAF 14, scheduled for October 23 at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. Lawler stated that he does not consider himself an underdog, noting that while his MMA career was defined by striking, he has utilized wrestling defensively for years to maintain standing positions.
To prepare for the bout, Lawler has transitioned from general conditioning to specialized live wrestling training. This included multiple trips to the Wolfpack Regional Training Center in North Carolina to work with high-level coaches and wrestlers. Lawler emphasized that his training focused on establishing defensive positions, recognizing tactical dangers, and developing offensive wrestling capabilities rather than relying solely on strength.
Chimaev, a former middleweight champion, enters the match with three consecutive victories in the Real American Freestyle (RAF) organization. Lawler, making his debut in the league, expressed confidence in his ability to compete at a high level despite the age gap and Chimaev's reputation for dominant wrestling pressure.
