Robert De Niro exits Mel Gibson film after one week
Robert De Niro abruptly exited the production of the film ‘Edge of Darkness’ after only one week of filming in 2008. The project, directed by Martin Campbell, was intended to serve as a Hollywood comeback for Mel Gibson.
De Niro had been cast as a shadowy operative opposite Gibson, but his sudden departure forced the production to replace him with Ray Winstone. While rumors circulated suggesting De Niro’s exit was linked to antisemitic comments made by Gibson during a 2006 arrest, no evidence was ever established to support this claim.
A spokesperson for De Niro officially attributed the split to “creative differences,” and no further detailed explanations were provided by the actors or the director. The film, which relocated the story of the original BBC miniseries to Boston, was eventually released in 2010.
