Robert Downey Jr. Returns as Doctor Doom in Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel’s next Avengers installment, titled "Avengers: Doomsday," is scheduled for worldwide release on December 18, 2026. The film marks the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time portraying the villain Doctor Victor Von Doom. The Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony) direct the movie, which they describe as the most emotionally complex and mature Avengers entry yet.

Production began in March 2025 and a trailer debuted at CinemaCon 2026. The ensemble cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and many others, spanning classic Avengers, the X‑Men and newer characters such as the Thunderbolts. Downey said the team experimented extensively to avoid the “let‑down” some fans felt after Infinity War and Endgame, aiming to deliver a story that satisfies high expectations. The film is positioned as a pivotal moment for the MCU’s future, with industry analysts noting its make‑or‑break potential for Disney’s superhero franchise.

While Tom Holland hinted at possible Spider‑Man involvement, no confirmation has been given. A follow‑up film, "Avengers: Secret Wars," is slated for December 2027, continuing the phase’s storyline.
