Robert Downey Jr. aims to redefine superhero genre with MCU return

Robert Downey Jr. has revealed that his decision to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Victor von Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is driven by a desire to redefine the superhero film genre. In a recent podcast appearance, the actor stated that the move was a mutual creative push with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to find a challenge that would reenergize both the creators and the audience.

In addition to discussing his upcoming role, details emerged regarding the emotional weight of his character Tony Stark’s final scene in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Director Anthony Russo noted that a reshoot for the character’s death was filmed on the same stage where Downey Jr. originally auditioned for the role of Iron Man. This connection, combined with the repetition of the iconic line “I am Iron Man,” was intended to honor the character’s legacy and provide a full-circle moment for the franchise.
