Robert Eggers' medieval horror film Werwulf set for Dec. 25, 2026 release

Director Robert Eggers announced his next project, Werwulf, a period horror film set in 13th‑century Britain. The story follows a nameless young farmer, played by Aaron Taylor‑Johnson, who grapples with a werewolf curse; only a dog on screen is given a name. The cast also includes Lily‑Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.

Eggers emphasized historical authenticity, shooting on 35 mm film with a 1.37:1 aspect ratio and using Middle English dialogue. He cited medieval European werewolf lore and the 17th‑century German case of Peter Stumpp as inspirations, linking the tale to historic witch‑trial hysteria. The film, described as possibly his darkest work, was originally planned in black‑and‑white but will be released in colour. Werwulf is scheduled to open in theaters on December 25, 2026.
