Robert Eggers to direct new Romeo and Juliet adaptation

Director Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a new film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” for Focus Features. The studio reportedly won the project following a competitive bidding war against A24, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros.

Eggers, known for his historical accuracy and gothic style in films such as “The Witch,” “The Lighthouse,” and “Nosferatu,” is expected to bring a period-specific approach to the tragedy. While early reports suggested the use of Old English, recent clarifications specify that the dialogue will be in Elizabethan English, also known as Early Modern English, to remain faithful to the era of the original play.

The project is anticipated to be Eggers’ next feature following the release of “Werwulf.” While specific casting, production timelines, and release dates have not yet been confirmed, the deal marks a continued collaboration between Eggers and Focus Features.
