Robert Fico addresses climate change and water security in Slovakia

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has addressed the urgent need for climate change adaptation, specifically regarding water protection and retention in Slovakia. Citing extreme droughts and heatwaves, Fico emphasized that constitutional changes and bans on water exports are insufficient, calling for more decisive measures.

Fico highlighted the necessity of extensive irrigation to ensure food security, noting the significant costs involved. He mentioned interest from investors in the United Arab Emirates regarding a potential Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to modernize the Slovak irrigation system, clarifying that such a project does not constitute privatization.

Regarding regional water management, Fico expressed support for managing water levels in the Danube. While noting that Slovakia does not wish to worsen the situation for Hungary—particularly concerning potential threats to their nuclear power plants due to low water levels—he maintained that management must also ensure the river remains navigable.

Additionally, the Prime Minister condemned a recent violent attack on foreign nationals in Nitra, stating that violence is not an acceptable solution for differing viewpoints.
