Robert Fico demands emergency EU summit over rising fuel prices

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called for an emergency European Union summit to address soaring fuel prices, which have reached nearly three euros per liter of diesel in some member states. Fico criticized the EU for its perceived inaction and cynicism, arguing that the bloc prioritizes providing hundreds of billions of euros in aid to Ukraine over addressing the immediate economic concerns of its own citizens.

Fico has expressed intention to send open letters to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. He argued that member states are being left to face the consequences of the oil crisis alone, often at the expense of essential public services like pensions, healthcare, and education.

In response to the crisis, the Slovak government is preparing domestic measures to control fuel prices, including potential limits on retailer profit margins. Additionally, Slovakia plans to implement significant discounts on public transport, such as 50 percent reductions for trains. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has also called for EU action, suggesting a temporary relaxation of fuel quality rules to boost European production of diesel and kerosene. In the region, the Czech government has announced it will restore fuel price regulations and reduce diesel excise duties starting in October.
