Robert Fico defends private jet travel to Croatia amid opposition scrutiny
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has defended his use of private aircraft for trips to Split, Croatia, following criticism from political opponents. Fico stated that he possesses sufficient legal income from his long political career and personal earnings to fund his lifestyle and travel. He argued that he has no obligation to inform the media of his movements, claiming that opposition scrutiny and media coverage incite hatred that could lead to further violence.
The political party SaS has raised concerns regarding the funding of these trips, alleging that Fico has taken at least eight private flights to Croatia since July 7, 2024. SaS representatives suggested the total cost could reach up to 120,000 euros and are initiating proceedings before the Committee for the Incompatibility of Functions. The party is also considering filing a criminal complaint with the General Prosecutor's Office regarding the potential receipt of an undue advantage.
Opposition members have also questioned the financial standing of the aviation company providing the services, noting that the operator is owned by a Dutch citizen based in Vienna with a history of business failures in Slovakia. Fico maintains that he will continue to use private aviation for time-sensitive travel, provided he pays for it using his own resources.
