Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has signaled that early parliamentary elections could take place as early as January. This move comes amid a deepening crisis within the governing coalition, specifically a conflict between Fico and his coalition partners, SNS leader Andrej Danko and Environment Minister Tomáš Tarab.

Fico issued an ultimatum to Danko and Tarab, demanding guarantees that the government can maintain its parliamentary majority. He stated that if the coalition cannot function due to their personal disputes, he is prepared to pursue early elections by proposing a constitutional amendment to shorten the electoral term. Fico also noted that his party, Smer-SD, is prepared to serve in the opposition if necessary and expressed openness to future cooperation with the Republika movement.

In an attempt to de-escalate the immediate tension, Fico announced plans to meet with President Petr Pellegrini to request the withdrawal of the proposal to dismiss Minister Tarab. However, opposition parties, including Progresívne Slovensko and SaS, have reacted sharply. Progresívne Slovensko expressed readiness for elections at any time, while SaS criticized Fico's position and called for his resignation.

Separately, Fico addressed Slovakia's international stance, stating that while the country remains in NATO and will honor its collective defense obligations, military neutrality would better suit Slovakia. He emphasized that he would not send Slovak troops into a conflict with Russia if such a war were provoked.
