Robert Fico uses controversial historical rhetoric at SNP anniversary

During the 82nd anniversary celebrations of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in Banská Bystrica, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico delivered a speech characterized by controversial historical interpretations and nationalist rhetoric.

Fico utilized quotes from Gustáv Husák, the former communist leader during the period of Soviet occupation, to frame the uprising as a struggle for Slovak sovereignty and independence. He suggested that the uprising was criticized by some because it was ‘too Slovak’ and ‘too independent,’ a claim that contrasts with historical critiques that view the uprising as anti-state.

His address also included accusations of ‘Russophobia’ against the European Union and emphasized a vision of the Slovak Republic as being in a state of ‘circular defense.’ Analysts note that Fico’s use of historical symbolism, while factually inconsistent, serves as an effective political tool for his voter base.
