US Marine Robert Gilman in critical condition in Russian prison

Former US Marine Robert Gilman has been detained in Russia since 2022. In June 2024 he slipped into a dissociative stupor and has been unable to eat on his own, requiring tube feeding for more than six weeks. He was moved from a prison hospital to the psychiatric ward of a civilian emergency hospital in Voronezh in late June.

Advocacy groups and his sister say he may be near death. Russian authorities have barred his mother from visiting despite a judicial order, and consular officials have had limited access. The US State Department and the White House have urged Moscow to release Gilman for urgent medical treatment in the United States. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly raised the case with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in Manila on July 23. Gilman is one of at least ten Americans known to be imprisoned in Russia and faces a total ten‑year sentence after additional years were added by a Voronezh court.
