Robert Gilman near death in Russian prison, US urges release
Former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman has been detained in Russia since 2022. In June 2024 he slipped into a dissociative stupor and has been fed through a tube for more than six weeks, remaining handcuffed to his hospital bed. He was moved from a prison hospital to the psychiatric ward of a civilian emergency hospital in Voronezh in late June, and his mother has been barred from visiting despite a court order permitting it. The U.S. State Department and the White House have repeatedly called on Moscow to allow Gilman to receive urgent medical treatment in the United States. A source said Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised the case with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in Manila on July 23. Gilman is one of at least eight to ten Americans known to be imprisoned in Russia, and a Voronezh court has increased his sentence to a total of ten years. Advocates warn his condition could become fatal if he is not released promptly.
