Hubertus Heil considers SPD leadership candidacy

Former German Labor Minister Hubertus Heil has stated that he cannot rule out a candidacy for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Following the resignation of Co-Chair Bärbel Bas, the party intends to elect new leadership during a special party convention in January.

Heil noted that he has received significant encouragement from within the party but emphasized that his decision depends on the future strategic direction of the SPD and the composition of the leadership team. He stressed that his interest is not in personal advancement or ‘shuffling positions,’ but rather in addressing the large-scale tasks facing the party, such as ensuring social cohesion and strengthening democracy.

Regarding regional politics, Heil expressed skepticism about the ability of the Left Party (Die Linke) to participate in a government coalition in Berlin, citing doubts about their capacity to govern. He stated that any potential coalition would require clear commitments to internal security and a definitive stance against antisemitism.
