Robert Habeck warns Germany is an ‘easy target’ for autocrats
Former Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has warned that Germany is an ‘easy target’ and ‘low-hanging fruit’ for autocrats. Speaking at the Lit. Cologne festival during the presentation of his new book, ‘Arctic Meltdown: Die Neuvermessung der Welt’, Habeck expressed concern regarding the country's vulnerability to foreign influence.
Habeck noted that intelligence services have identified Germany as a target for manipulation. He specifically cited Russia's attempts to influence elections and conduct disinformation campaigns. Furthermore, he pointed to the role of American software companies and their algorithms, noting that platforms like Meta (Instagram) and X (formerly Twitter) contribute to the formation of ideological ‘bubbles’ that can indirectly impact democratic stability.
Reflecting on Germany's national identity, Habeck described the country as ‘torn’ due to its complex history, including two world wars and the legacy of the division between East and West. He suggested that this internal fragmentation makes the nation more susceptible to those seeking to undermine democratic ideals.
