During a meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed Armenia's geopolitical direction. Putin emphasized that while Armenia has a legitimate right to pursue European Union membership, doing so would be incompatible with its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). He warned that initiating EU integration procedures would effectively mean leaving the EAEU, potentially leading to broken trade chains and the loss of market benefits.

Putin urged Yerevan to make a definitive decision regarding its integration path as soon as possible so that Russia can adjust its own economic and trade policies accordingly. He suggested that the Armenian people should decide their future through a national referendum. In response, Pashinyan maintained that Armenia's pursuit of EU membership does not violate its existing obligations to the EAEU and noted that the country has not initiated any formal withdrawal process from the union.

Economic data highlighted during the discussions showed that Russia remains Armenia's primary economic partner, with trade turnover reaching 2.5 billion dollars in the first half of 2026. Putin noted that Armenia's GDP has tripled since joining the EAEU, but stressed the need for clarity to maintain stable bilateral relations.
