Robert Lewandowski signs with Chicago Fire as Designated Player

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, 37, will leave Barcelona after his contract expires and join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire. The club announced that he has signed a Designated Player contract that runs through 2028, making him one of the league’s highest‑paid players.

The two‑year deal (with an optional third year) was reportedly worth around $20 million per season. Chicago Fire’s sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter said Lewandowski will raise the team’s competitive standards and serve as the face of a larger project to bring Chicago back to the front of the MLS.

Lewandowski’s first appearance is expected in July, with a debut slated against the Vancouver Whitecaps. His arrival follows a string of high‑profile European stars moving to MLS and is expected to boost both on‑field performance and commercial interest for the club and the league.
