Robert Lewandowski faces scrutiny over Nations League suspension and US return

Robert Lewandowski is facing scrutiny following his decision to leave the Poland national team camp to return to the United States. During a 6-0 victory against Romania in the Nations League, Lewandowski scored a hat-trick but also received a yellow card in the 42nd minute for a foul on Andrei Coubis. This second booking results in an automatic suspension for Poland’s upcoming match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Speculation has emerged in both Polish and Bosnian media suggesting the yellow card may have been intentional to avoid traveling to Bosnia and to ensure availability for his club, Chicago Fire, in their upcoming MLS match against Vancouver Whitecaps. Former agent Cezary Kucharski claimed the card was taken with the agreement of coach Jan Urban, though Lewandowski has denied these claims, stating he simply intended to block the ball and accidentally stepped on an opponent.

Following the match, Lewandowski opted not to travel with the squad to Bosnia, a decision confirmed by PZPN spokesperson Emil Kopański. Lewandowski stated he saw no benefit in traveling to support the team if he could not play due to the suspension. Chicago Fire has since acknowledged his return, noting he is training with the team.
