Robert Lloyd jailed for life after confessing to 1994 Manchester murder

Robert Lloyd, 53, has been sentenced to life in prison after walking into a police station to confess his involvement in a 1994 murder. Lloyd pleaded guilty to the killing of 26-year-old Michael Kenneth McDermott, who was attacked by a group of masked men armed with knives and baseball bats at a home in Moston, Manchester.

The attack occurred on November 9, 1994, when the assailants forced their way into a property on Ashville Terrace and attacked McDermott while he lay on a sofa. Lloyd, from Denton, Tameside, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to serve a minimum of 17 years.

While reporting restrictions were previously in place to protect ongoing inquiries, a judge lifted them on September 21. Greater Manchester Police have reopened the case and are actively working to identify other members of the gang involved in the attack. Detective Inspector Rachel Smith stated that the investigation remains active and urged anyone with information to come forward, noting that ‘it’s not too late’ to assist in bringing all responsible parties to justice.
