Robert Ménard opens Feria de Béziers with controversial political speech

The 2026 Feria de Béziers has commenced in France, featuring a five-day program of music, parades, and bullfighting. The festivities began with a religious procession and a mass at the arenas, followed by a parade of giant floats representing the Virgin, Saint Aphrodise, and the Count of Trencavel.

During his inaugural speech, Mayor Robert Ménard emphasized the Mediterranean identity of the city, describing the local population as a “strong, free people.” His address included several controversial political statements, where he criticized feminists, animal rights activists, and individuals subject to deportation orders (OQTF). He also characterized a solar eclipse occurring during the event as a “sign from God,” using the moment to challenge secularist perspectives.
