Robert Plant appears at Bewdley junior chess tournament
Former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant made an unannounced appearance at a charity junior chess tournament in Bewdley, Worcestershire on August 1, 2024. The event, organized by the town mayor, featured the "Bewdley Mayor's Junior Charity Chess Tournament" and the "Worcestershire Junior Rapid Championship".
Plant played a game against 17‑year‑old local player George Walker. The match ended when Plant ran out of time and had to leave, resulting in a win for Walker. Walker said, "He's one of my favorite music artists," and added that the experience was "tiny odds" for him. Organiser John Wrench of the Kidderminster Chess Club noted, "We were really delighted to have him along, and it adds a bit of prestige to the event."
The appearance generated excitement among participants and highlighted Plant’s ongoing connection to his home region.
