Robert Schumann commemorated on 170th death anniversary

July 29 1856 marked the death of German Romantic composer Robert Schumann, and 170 years later the music community remembers his contribution. Born on 8 June 1810 in Zwickau, Schumann showed early talent in both music and literature, eventually studying law before turning fully to composition after hearing a Paganini concert.

He co‑founded the influential journal Neue Zeitschrift für Musik in 1834, championing young talents such as Brahms and Liszt. His marriage to Clara Wieck in 1840 produced a prolific partnership that helped popularise his works worldwide. Schumann suffered a debilitating hand injury in 1831 and later battled mental illness, dying in a psychiatric clinic in 1856. His piano repertoire, symphonies, chamber music and the famed A‑minor piano concerto continue to be performed on concert stages around the globe.
