Robert Sighiartău alleges state protection of Călin Georgescu

Romanian National Liberal Party (PNL) deputy Robert Sighiartău has alleged that former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu is being protected by certain elements within the Romanian state. In an interview with RFI, Sighiartău claimed there is a lack of complete public information regarding Georgescu’s professional activities and the financing of his electoral campaign.

Sighiartău further stated that there is ongoing discussion within the halls of Parliament suggesting Georgescu may have had ties to intelligence services, specifically alleging he was part of the Foreign Intelligence Directorate before 1989 and subsequently the Foreign Intelligence Service. While the deputy did not provide direct evidence for these claims, he called for authorities to clarify Georgescu’s past and professional history.

Additionally, Sighiartău criticized Georgescu’s political messaging as having a “messianic” tone and suggested that recent protests in Victoriei Square were politically escalated by the AUR party and Georgescu’s supporters.
