Roberta Metsola honors SS Ohio tanker that saved Malta

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has paid tribute to the SS Ohio, the American-built tanker credited with saving Malta during World War II. The tribute coincides with the Feast of Santa Marija.

During Operation Pedestal, also known as the Santa Marija Convoy, the SS Ohio arrived in Grand Harbour on August 15, 1942. At the time, Malta was under siege and facing critical shortages of food and fuel. Despite sustaining heavy damage from attacks during its journey through the Mediterranean, the tanker successfully delivered essential fuel, which is regarded as a turning point that prevented the islands from surrendering to Axis forces.

The operation came at a significant human cost, with hundreds of sailors losing their lives. The arrival of the SS Ohio remains a major symbol of Maltese resilience.
