Roberto Ayala apologises for post‑World Cup final altercation with Spain’s Dani Olmo
After Spain defeated Argentina 1‑0 in extra time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, a chaotic brawl broke out on the pitch. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala confronted Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo, delivering a shove that some footage described as a punch. Ayala later told Valencia Capital Radio, “Of course I’m sorry… It was more of a shove than anything else, a reaction to something he said,” and accepted full responsibility, saying emotions had gotten the better of him.
The incident also involved Argentine players Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, while teammate Leandro Paredes grabbed Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation and may impose suspensions or fines on the individuals and the Argentine Football Association. Ayala said he will apologise to Olmo in person if they meet again.
