Roberto Carlos denies rumors of conversion to Islam

Former Brazilian football star Roberto Carlos has publicly denied rumors that he converted to Islam. The 53-year-old issued a statement on social media to clarify his position following widespread media speculation.

“I would like to clarify, after recent media speculations, that I have not converted to Islam,” Carlos stated, adding that he holds the utmost respect for the Muslim community and people of all faiths. He emphasized that faith is a deeply personal matter.

The rumors originated after Turkish deputy Ali Şahin, a member of the AKP, claimed on social media that Carlos had embraced Islam. Şahin reported that the information was provided by Sheikh Jihad Hammadeh, vice-president of the National Association of Islamic Jurists of Brazil (ANAJI), who alleged that Carlos had recited the shahada approximately four weeks prior.

Speculation was further fueled by the marriage of Carlos to Souhaila Ettahiri, a Moroccan-origin businesswoman and football agent, which included Islamic traditions. While Şahin expressed regret for any distress caused to Carlos and his family, the former player has moved to formally dispel the claims.
