Roberto Costanzo, veteran Italian politician, dies at 97

Roberto Costanzo, a prominent figure in Italian politics and a long-time member of the Christian Democracy party, has died at the age of 97. He passed away in San Marco dei Cavoti following respiratory complications from pneumonia.

Costanzo held numerous influential positions throughout his career. He served as a provincial councilor for Benevento starting in 1964 and was a member of the first regional government of Campania in 1970, where he served as the regional assessor for agriculture. His political career extended to the European Parliament, where he represented Christian Democracy from 1979 to 1989.

In addition to his political roles, Costanzo was active in the economic sector, serving as the president of the Benevento Chamber of Commerce from 1991 to 2004. He also held leadership roles in organizations such as Coldiretti, Confcooperative, and Terranostra. Following his official institutional career, he remained an active voice in public debate through various publications, focusing on the development of internal areas and agricultural issues in the Sannio region.
