Roberto Fiore announces candidacy for Mayor of Rome

Roberto Fiore, leader of the far-right movement Forza Nuova, has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Rome. This move comes shortly after the Rome Court of Appeal confirmed his sentence of eight years and six months in prison for his involvement in the October 9, 2021, assault on the national headquarters of the CGIL trade union.

Fiore's candidacy is part of a broader electoral strategy by Forza Nuova across Italy. The movement also announced that Luca Castellini will run for Mayor of Verona, while Giuseppe Bonanno Conti and Massimo Ursino are candidates for the 2027 Sicilian regional elections. Forza Nuova stated that the decision aims to reaffirm the connection between the movement and the people in response to judicial proceedings against its leaders.

While the appellate sentence was confirmed, Fiore remains eligible to run as the ruling is not yet final and can be appealed to the Court of Cassation. Under current Italian law, specifically the Severino law, his legal status regarding candidacy may change depending on further judicial developments.
