Martínez, who led Belgium to a third‑place finish at the 2018 World Cup and won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal in 2025, is being considered to replace Sebastián Beccacece, who departed after Ecuador’s elimination in the 2026 tournament round of 16.

The federation aims to finalize a new head coach by August‑September 2026, with the intention that Martínez would arrive in Ecuador in mid‑August to begin preparations for friendly matches scheduled for September.
