Roberto Vannacci emerges as rising figure in Italian right-wing politics
Former paratrooper general Roberto Vannacci is transforming from an internet provocateur into a significant political force in Italy. Utilizing social media to project a persona reminiscent of a Roman legionnaire, Vannacci has gained traction within the ‘manosphere’—online communities focused on masculinity and opposition to feminism and ‘woke’ culture.
Vannacci recently drew criticism for using artificial intelligence to generate a manipulated image of state secretary Matilde Siracusano, which emphasized her cleavage. Siracusano condemned the act, stating, “It is disgusting to think that someone can manipulate a woman's image for such pathetic propaganda.”
As the next elections approach, Vannacci’s party, National Future, holds approximately 8% in polls, positioning him as a potential kingmaker for right-wing coalitions. This rise presents a strategic challenge for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who must determine if Vannacci is a valuable ally or a dangerous competitor. His political project appears to target young men who feel alienated by progressive cultural shifts.
