Matilde Siracusano AI photo controversy disrupts Reggio Calabria elections

A political controversy has erupted during the Reggio Calabria by-elections following the publication of an AI-manipulated image of Matilde Siracusano, a Forza Italia deputy and partner of Calabria Governor Roberto Occhiuto. The image, shared by Roberto Vannacci, leader of Futuro Nazionale, featured an artificially exaggerated cleavage on Siracusano's clothing.

Siracusano has announced her intention to file a legal complaint, characterizing the act as sexism and a digital bullying attempt rather than satire. Roberto Occhiuto and Forza Italia leader Antonio Tajani both condemned the image as vulgar and unacceptable. Vannacci has denied creating the deepfake, suggesting the responsibility lies with the original source.

The incident has sparked a broader debate regarding the use of artificial intelligence in political campaigning. Alberto Barachini of Forza Italia has called for all political parties to refrain from using AI-modified content to protect democratic integrity. Meanwhile, voter turnout for the by-election was reported at 14.97% by the end of the first day of voting.
