Roberto Vannacci Gains Momentum in Italy’s Center‑Right Landscape

Political analyst Roberto D’Alimonte notes that former general Roberto Vannacci is emerging as a notable figure on Italy’s right, attracting voters dissatisfied with the current coalition. After securing over 500,000 preference votes in the 2024 European elections while running on the Lega list, Vannacci announced the formation of his own party, Futuro Nazionale, early in 2026. Recent polls place the party at roughly 4‑4.5 % of the vote, a share that is siphoning support mainly from the Lega and, to a lesser extent, Fratelli d’Italia, thereby tightening the contest for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s centre‑right bloc ahead of the next national elections.

Vannacci presents himself as a “true right” voice, opposing the EU Green Deal, advocating remigration policies, and criticizing Brussels. D’Alimonte warns that integrating Vannacci into a governing coalition could radicalise the government’s image and risk alienating moderates in Forza Italia, while excluding him might further fragment the right‑wing vote and jeopardise the stability of a potential second Meloni administration.
