Roberto Vannacci launches far‑right Futuro Nazionale party challenging Italy's PM Meloni

Former Italian army general Roberto Vannacci, known as “Il Generale,” announced the formation of his new party, Futuro Nazionale, at a rally in Rome just steps from the Vatican. Vannacci framed the movement as “the real right,” pledging strict security and migration policies, opposition to the EU Green Deal, and a hard line on cultural issues.

The party claims more than 100,000 members and eight deputies, including former League and Forza Italia lawmakers. Polls place Futuro Nazionale at around 4‑5 % of the vote, a share that could be decisive in the tightly contested 2027 general election. Analysts say Vannacci’s entry creates a “wild‑card” on the right, forcing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to decide whether to co‑opt the challenger or confront him, with potential repercussions for the stability of her governing coalition.

Vannacci’s rhetoric includes calls for “remigration” of non‑integrated foreigners and criticism of Western sanctions on Russia, positioning his platform further right than Meloni’s already nationalist government.
